Ethical Bunny Breeding In Northern Westchester.

Aster Holland Lops is a small rabbitry located in Westchester, New York. We raise our rabbits indoors, ensuring they are accustomed to the sounds and interactions of dogs, cats, and children of all ages. Our team includes an applied animal behaviorist who happily educates each buyer on how to hold, litter box train, and interact with their rabbit to create the calmest pet possible. Our bunnies have been placed in schools, libraries, and as wonderful emotional support companions. Special attention is given to conditioning our bunnies to enjoy interactions with people, making them excellent companions for individuals with special needs. Help us spread the word: bunnies aren’t just pets—they’re family!

At Aster Holland Lops, we ensure that our bunnies live happy and fulfilling lives. We expose each bunny to an indoor and outdoor playscape so they become accustomed to different environments. Inside, our litters are conditioned to everyday life, and each of our rabbits is socialized, litter-box trained, and clicker trained using positive reinforcement. Like dogs, this socialization creates a sense of comfort even when life gets chaotic.

Important Points to Note:

  • Supervision Needed: Bunnies are prey animals and require supervision around young children.

  • Daily Interaction: Bunnies need daily interaction to remain happy and healthy. A well-mannered bunny can enjoy full-home freedom, and can easily be trained to walk on a leash.

  • Litter Box Training: Our bunnies are litter box trained from birth by their mothers. This training needs to be continued in their new homes. We educate each adoptee how to do this.

  • Download Our eBook: For more information on loving and caring for a bunny, and what to buy, please download our eBook which explains the basics of having a bunny as a pet.

About The Breed

Holland Lops are one of the smallest lop-eared rabbit breeds that are recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association. Weighing about four pounds, they are small enough to keep indoors and resilient enough to live in an outdoor hutch. The Holland Lops breed is a mix between the Netherland Dwarf and the French Lop breeds. Compared to other domestic breeds, they are easy to care for, as they only require basic grooming. On average, they live between 7 and 10 years.

Ethical Breeding

We hold ourselves to high ethical standards. Each one of our bunnies has their own enclosure with plenty of space. We provide them with a healthy and varied diet, a safe environment, and plenty of enrichment. We never breed our bunnies before the age of 6 months, and we allow for rest periods in between litters. Our does only breed until they are four years old. These conditions guarantee our bunnies a happy and low-stress life.

Imprinting

Imprinting is when a young animal learns to view another animal or person as trustworthy. We make a great effort to properly imprint each of our rabbits by gently handling them from the moment they’re born until the day they go home with their families.  At four weeks old, they are brought into our living room where they live among our other pets and are surrounded by the ho-hum of everyday life.
